Happiness in Ghana

12 January

I spent Christmas and the lead up to the New Year in Ghana – Happiness in Ghana.

With my granny, aunts, uncles, cousins and my just turned three-year old nephew, Isaiah. Waking up to palm trees, sunshine and stepping out of the house to be greeted by warmth. It’s a shock to be back in London. There’s little else to do but get on with it though. Fortunately, I already had a theatre performance lined up. Adult Child/Dead Child, written by Claire Dowie and directed by Colin Watkeys, has started my year. We’ve been performing at The White Bear Theatre in Kennington. A small intimate theatre space. Lighting permitted, every audience member can be seen and we can keep connected, which is perfect for this play that speaks of childhood experiences and mental illness. I’ve been told that after our first performance one audience member said the performance was so honest, direct and true, she thought we’d been brought from the streets to tell our life stories. I can’t stop smiling everytime I think of that.

From the safe intimacy of the White Bear, I’m next being locked up in jail, in Essex. My first TV role. Nothing big, just being a gang member, causing riots. Starting the New Year in jail is not what I’d intended but, I’m pretty happy about it.

There is no point missing a place or people, wasted energy. Also, the sooner one place is left, the sooner plans can be made to return! My happiness will be found elsewhere in the meantime and Ghana, I’ll be back soon.
