Creating my own theatre work for solo performance is intense, random and liberating.
The Lost Theatre in Vauxhall is giving me a stage to do it on. With a group of others also working on their own solo pieces we are creating our work via workshops with director Colin Watkeys. Colin adopts my favourite directorial approach – which is advocated by director David Mamet too – let the actor do her thang.
We have been called “New Shoots”. The piece I am working on is going to be the beginning of something I hope will develop and grow into a full piece of work. At the moment, I am just creating the first ten minutes. At the time I write this, I don’t know what it is or what it will be, but I have a flavour…My performance will be on Tuesday 8th July, 7.30pm. I’ve got time to work it out…as the weeks pass the fear starts to reduce as a solo performance piece starts to take shape. Create it. Believe in it. Do it. “The audience are an essential element of solo theatre. They are the other character in the drama and important for shaping the future of solo work”. Plus it’s only £5 on the door!
