Blesséd blessed – here we go again?
As the week progresses my thoughts are with Syria.
Facebook posts look like this: “Here we go again”, “fighting other people’s war” and “how can we stand and watch?” We are on the verge of action and the end of the week will reveal all as the British draft UN resolution authorising “necessary measures” to protect Syrian civilians goes before the UN Security Council in New York.
Responsibility for the fatal chemical weapons attack near Damascus on 21st August has not been accepted by President Assad who continues to blame opposition.
As the BBC publishes a list of US, UK and French available resources to attack Syria, there is no question these are scary times. Are we on the verge of war?
Being relatively blessed in the West, our lives go on as usual. Notting Hill Carnival (now in its 49th year) a perfect example and demonstration of the political and cultural freedom we enjoy. However, what has been done, what has been suffered, to realise the peace we enjoy today is never forgotten. Carnival fell on the same weekend as the world celebrated and marked the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King’s passing. I also enjoyed watching Capoeria during the Carnival celebrations: a martial art created by African/Brazilian slaves but disguised as an entertaining dance since “property” were forbidden to learn how to fight and defend themselves.
As our Governments lead us forward on the matter of Syria, I believe in the words of Archbishop Justin Welby, let us not rush any decisions. The way things look this week though it does seem….here we go again.
