Ultimate Duels of Death

I dream of one day dueling to the death, for honour, for valour…

Last night I attended an incredibly inspiring Masterclass session hosted by Equity registered fight director Philip D’Orleans. Needless to say, my fighting urges were fueled further but I also learnt much about the creative genius that lies behind making stage combat scenes a reality for the audience and part of the story-telling.

Here is a clip from an ultimate duel of death – Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) duels with Archibald Cunningham (Tim Roth) in a beautifully crafted scene where their fight moves tell us so much about their characters. The direct, honest Rob Roy moves in straight lines with bold full strikes whilst iniquitous, sneaky Cunningham moves in circles, darting in and out, striking from behind. Stage combat is violent but also clever and sexy:
